Breakout: Wealth Taxes

DATE: 17th of June 2020

TIME: 4:45 PM – 6:00 PM (CEST)

Breakout Session

Let’s talk about taxes, taxes, taxes: a transatlantic conversation

While the pandemic lays bare the impact of growing inequality in our communities, we have an enormous opportunity through the economic recovery process to rebalance taxes to support public funding and investment. There is growing momentum globally in support of wealth taxes. International organisations that have previously championed austerity, like the International Monetary Fund, have encouraged governments to consider new wealth taxes. Wealth tax proposals have been introduced in the US presidential primaries, as well as during the last Canadian federal election. Public surveys in North America show widespread support for taxing wealth, and renewed conversation about wealth taxes across Europe suggest growing interest there as well.
