Breakout Session

Cities as Changemakers. How to tackle global challenges at the local level?

Today, mayors are actors of global relevance. The mayors panel is part of a #PGS20 thematic thread called Leadership: Creating spaces for progressives to govern. We want to look at progressive models of governance at the city level by presenting a narrative for an inclusive vision of the future, winning the public argument, and developing strategies for progressives to govern.

This session looks at the global role of cities in tackling today’s challenges. In particular, we want to look at the outbreak of COVID-19 as a trigger for unleashing a poli-crisis of social, economic, political character. These days, mayors and local administrations are at the forefront of facing the heat. At the same time, even when a health emergency has passed, its aftermath will linger, also affecting life in cities.
