Breakout: Populist Strategies
DATE: 16th of June 2020
TIME: 5:15 PM – 6:30 PM (CEST)
Breakout Session
Populist Strategies and Narratives in Times of COVID-19
The session focuses on how the far-right uses the COVID-crises to propagate its ideology of a ‘clean’ and homogenous nation – be it in the US, in Hungary, Italy or Germany. This is not a new phenomenon. In the past, epidemics have often been instrumentalised to stigmatise minorities and marginalised groups. With social media, however, the far right of today has much more effective communicative tools at their hands. What are their narratives and strategies, and how can we prevent them from increasing their discursive and political power?
