Big data, fragmented voice: Building a European civic movement on data rights

Citizens’ data is international and mobile. The corporations that collect the vast swathes of personal data are primarily US companies with data storage facilities across the globe. Yet we have little say in how, when or why this data about us is collected and used.

We, as European and global citizens, lack voice and agency to exert and alter our data rights. But to realise this agency, citizens must be informed and enabled to talk. This workshop will explore why we need a civic movement on data rights and how to build it. It is designed to initiate a dialogue between private and public actors, policymakers, data experts and civil society movers and identify topics and strategies to spring to action. The goal is to empower citizens across Europe to have a say in data rights.
